Learning to trust after the trauma of the Artsakh war

Camp Nairi

A safe haven for Armenia’s traumatized children

In the fall of 2020, the lives of thousands of children in Artsakh and Armenia were forever changed by the 44-day war, as many lost family members or saw loved ones injured, leaving deep emotional wounds. In 2023, 120,000 Armenians were once again forced to leave their ancestral homes under threat, exposing children to the trauma of displacement and loss. Today, many of these families find support at AGBU Camp Nairi, a free sleep-away camp designed for youth who have experienced profound loss, where healing is encouraged through a combination of recreational activities and therapeutic sessions with licensed professionals.

A growing need for healing and growth

Following the mass displacement of Artsakh families to Armenia, the need to support affected youth has grown significantly. Since January 2024, AGBU has expanded its efforts through weekend family retreats, offering access to mental health professionals, as well as art and music therapy. These programs have shown clear results, highlighting the importance of early support. With growing demand, AGBU aims in 2026 to reach up to 800 children through summer camps and 720–800 children and 400–450 mothers through family programs — ensuring that no vulnerable child or family is left without support.

From 2021 to 2025, Camp Nairi has supported 3,395 children and 878 mothers.

Developing a true support network

Our program works to change perceptions around mental health by connecting experts from the diaspora and Armenia to create meaningful support programs. The time spent with parents in advance of a child's stay at Camp Nairi is critical to ensure trust and partnership between our work and the family environment. While each child’s trauma is deeply personal, bringing them together encourages open expression and creates lasting bonds. These shared moments of connection and joy offer a renewed sense of hope for the future.

  • After losing his father, Abraham would have nightmares each night. I knew it was important to address his fears and that | could trust AGBU to take good care of him.”
  • I really loved my time at Camp Nairi. I made good friends and everyone made me comfortable and happy. I want to come back again and again.”
  • I have tried for so long to keep a brave face in front of the kids, but the stress and fear inside me haunt my sleepless nights. AGBU Camp Nairi Family Circle is a light guiding me out of the darkness that we Armenians have experienced. Together, we will do the work to recover and move on for the sake of our children. I have met so many other mothers from other parts of Artsakh. We lost our homeland, but gained a community that feels like home.”
  • Each child has his or her own challenges to overcome after this tragedy. In bringing them together, they see they are not alone and so many people care about them. This comfort is critical to healing.”
  • To help the children process their grief, anger, frustration and anxiety, we had to gain their trust. In doing so, we were able to help them acknowledge and cope with their emotions.”
  • AGBU will never abandon those in critical need. For these families to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives, they need emotional support and access to mental health services. We are proud to offer both to families whose loved ones made the ultimate sacrifice for a noble cause.”
